Philadanco

This celebration of dance bag honors the life and work of founder, dancer, and philanthropist, Joan Myers Brown. After being denied entrance into a segregated Philadelphia Ballet, Joan Myers-Brown founded the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts in 1960.

In 1970 she founded the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco!) to ensure that people of color acquired equal status in mainstream dance. She dreamed of a school where African Americans could learn and develop through methods tailored specifically to their individual needs – a program created for ethnic bodies.
